The story of Raajneeti is too sprawling to detail here, and since it took me a while to figure out who’s who, I will let you solve the intricate puzzle yourself. Basically, the story involves two powerful political families, connected by marriage, whose next generation fall out amongst themselves, leading to vicious intrigue and blood letting, a lot of it played on TV news media. The story reflects strong shades of the ancient epic Mahabharata mixed with another modern classic, The Godfather. You can spot Arjun, Duryodhana, Yuddhishter, Karan, Kunti, Draupadi, Dhritrashtra and Krishna in the film, just as you see entire scenes inspired from Godfather, the latter being a pity.

Despite the range of talent involved, the director manages to do justice to most characters, barring Naseeruddin Shah. A major reason for this is the relentless screenplay which moves swiftly, while the dialogue remains sharp, both a hallmark of Prakash Jha. The length of the film only begins to grate towards the second half, when the story turns filmy, especially in the emotional and romantic sequences, which don’t quite blend into the rest of the mayhem happening. The eventual climax, with a grand shootout, seemed a bit simple and stretched for today’s political day and age. However, the film stays gripping for the most part, while the election rallies, political meetings, intrusive media presence and security details are shown realistically on a huge canvas, making for a rousing Hindi heartland experience, fully sweaty, grimy and dusty. Don’t expect pretty faces or designer clothes.

Ranbir Kapoor, who has been brilliant in all his films, carries on with his insouciant charm, as he puts in a steely, cold performance, studiedly removed. The beautiful Katrina Kaif plays a character whose graph changes dramatically, and she handles it well. However, the film is not their love story, which remains thwarted.

Nana Patekar is natural and brilliant as mamaji, Manoj Bajpai plays a sharply styled and etched rascal, while Ajay Devgn is powerful and explosive as the Dalit leader. Most of the other cast, notably Shruti Seth, puts in a very sharp performance.

As for the music, one almost misses it amidst the relentless scheming, plotting and double twists happening on screen.

Finally, like in most Prakash Jha’s films, you get to brush up your textbook Hindi, always a change.
